It is a sad reality that most of the time, most of us are looking at our phones, instead of looking at the person in front of us (preferably in their eyes) or just enjoying the view or the people passing. I want to make this unfortunate habit a bit more useful than just staring at the screen desperately for a message from a friend to tell us what they are doing without us (while when they are with us, we look for messages from other friends LOL). How? By sharing some apps that can turn the non-stop staring at our smartphone screens more useful, practical or even educational. These apps are specific to Geneva and that makes them special already. If you know more, pls share or give me your thoughts or your experiences with any of the below. Here we go… thin_red_line Geneva4Kids or GVA4Kids icon-1024-300x300 Yes, I do not have any kids, but still I love them and of course you for having them. This App is for you. What to do with your kid in Geneva. Meaning on top of feeding it, cleaning it, educating it, also how to entertain it in this city. Lots of things posted everyday. There is a little bug. The arrow on the event to go back does not work. Instead if you tap twice at the top, it goes back to the menu of the day. Someday you will thank me for this App.  Not the bug clarification, but for the app overall.

thin_red_lineMedAMGe
medAMGe This is about finding a doctor everywhere in the city and of any specialization. The cool feature of this app is the language. Let’s say you are looking for a doctor who speaks Albanian. Well there is one in Geneva. Just one. Bosnian? We have two. Actually one of them is the one who speaks the Albanian too. You get the point. As always, once you find the doctor who meets your requirements in terms of languages, location, specialization, favorite TV show and eye color, do ask around if anybody would actually recommend him/her.

thin_red_lineCamGeneva
screen320x480 This has shots of Traffic cameras around Geneva. It does not refresh as often as I would like. But for checking the traffic, it gets the job done. Now if you are trying to catch your significant other on his/her way to an inferior than you insignificant other, then no. This app is not good enough for stalking, spying or preventing the love of your life to cheat on you. It just does not refresh as fast and this gives quite a window to the love of your life to escape and sin. Shame on them and shame of the app for not refreshing faster… appstore_frgoogle_play

thin_red_linele Weekend
leweekend A cute and simple app with events around the city. It misses the link to the actual website of the event, but then again what is Google for? The app is free, we cannot ask that much. I suppose they are working on it… (are you?)

thin_red_lineVotations CH or T’es toi et vote
votations You do remember that this country is all about the opinion of the public? That they vote all the time, almost every week. Right? You remember my post about the most interesting referendums of the past decade? Please say yes. Anyway I take it as a yes. Well, this app has all the upcoming subjects that the Swiss are called to vote for. And quite some info about them. It is cool to check it every now and then. Specially on Sunday morning, so you look for the results soon after. This way you wont have to read my next post about referendums. You will know it all already and before me…

thin_red_lineSwiss Cantons
swisscantons This is my favorite. One of the features is a game about the capitals of the cantons. I have to admit that I knew just a handful of them. What I do not dare to admit (fine if you insist, there you go) is that the game seems to reloop the questions.  Still I was getting them wrong, even if I had seen them just minutes ago. I was that bad. But I kept trying. After an hour I quite. Because finally I had arrived in Lausanne by train and I had learnt already a couple more and that was enough for me. I do not need much to feel content… By the way the flags game is also cool. Let’s see if you will do better than me. EXTREMELY possible.

thin_red_lineBeachGuide
beachguide ALL the beaches in Switzerland with all the info you need and more. A description of the place, opening hours, weather forecast, entry fees, etc. I love it. I can’t wait to use it. Plus all the swimming pools. And these you can use already now.

thin_red_lineBusted
901826_494310383951757_2004672818_o This app is about avoiding to get just that. BUSTED. In case you do not have a ticket on the public transport. I do not recommend the use of it, as I do not recommend that you get on a tram or bus without a ticket. But in the very remote case that you were in a hurry and you just jumped on the vehicle or in case you lost your ticket or just in case you forgot your pass at home, this app could tell you if there are any controllers around and where. That is if somebody has taken the time to register it just now. And trust me, people do. I will not judge the people who offer this kind of info or who use this app. Nope, I did not delete it, it is still on my iPhone. LOL. appstore_frgoogle_play

thin_red_lineSalon d’Auto
salonauto A seasonal app that you can download when the Salon d’auto is about to start and then you can delete to free up some memory. Latest news, info about the event, the exhibitors, contests, web TV. What more can you ask?

thin_red_lineParkingMe or Pme
pme You are downtown around 4pm and you are looking for a parking/garage? The localization feature will point to the nearest one, it will tell you how many available spots there are, how much it costs per hour and the opening hours. Plus how to get there. If I had a car and I wasn’t the rigid ecolo that I am, then I would use this frequently. Did I mention that it covers all Swiss cities? Well, it does.

thin_red_lineSwiss Quiz
swissquiz This is another quiz about Switzerland. I must be a mazochist, because I have downloaded a few of these by now to make me feel inadequate or at least bad about living in a country where I know so little. But then again, if I continue spending time on those, then one day I might find the courage to participate in a Swiss TV Knowledge show and win lots of Swiss Francs. Till then, if I am lucky, I might get a question about who founded Migros and get some points when playing Trivia Pursuit with my friends.
